Because of the setting where the Hope United Church of Christ sits, about 3 miles south of Fremont on County trunk "H", it is better known locally as "The Church in the Pines". Emphasizing its Calvanistic heritage, this congregation from its beginning was affiliated with the “Reformed Church” in the U.S.A. in Its history dates back to the 1860's when following the Civil War, many German and Swiss immigrants were moving into the area primarily on the east side of the Wolf River. In 1874 the cluster of neighbors took that step to become an official congregation, adapting the name – “Die Reformirte Hofnungs Gemeinde” – The Hope Reformed Church). They dedicated their first church building, a remodeled former one-room school which was located near the present Pioneer Cemetery at the east edge of Fremont (formerly Fremont Town Hall, currently the Fremont Museum). The cornerstone of Hope Church is marked “1903” dignifying the year the congregation moved to its present location.

In 1858 missionaries from Oshkosh purchased five acres of land to build a church so they would not have o spend a whole day walking to and from Zittau. A log church was erected. The second church, a frame building, was dedicated on Reformation Day, October 32, 1871. It was erected after the fashion of a "barn church." The third and present church was bult and dedicated in 1903. A larger chancel was added to the church building in 1929. The second schoolhouse and the present parsonage were built in 1905 and 1906. The parsonage has been converted into a parish house and is used for Sunday school, meetings and social activities. The congregation began with the Wisconsin Synod. In 1883, it joined the Ohio Synod, the the American Lutheran Church in 1930. It affiliated with the American Lutheran Church in 1960. Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS). The Immanuel congregation is the result of a merger of the Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church (German Lutheran) and the Evangelical Lutheran Salem Congregation (Swedish Lutheran) which took place in 1930. Salem Lutheran was formed in 1878 when people left the Scandinavia Church to form their own congregation in the town of Farmington. The Salem congregation relocated to Waupaca in September 1922. The congregation purchased two lots on West Badger Street and built a modest church. The Peace congregation was established in March 1910. On February 9, 1919, Peace Congregation purchased the church from the Danish Methodists for $1.00 which was located on Mill and Division. In June 1930, the Salem Congregation offered to sell their church to the Peace Congregation. This would also involve the merger of the two congregations. For a short time, the congregation was referred to as "The New Peace Lutheran Church." On January 18, 1931, the congregation chose the name Immanuel. On May 6, 1931, the Immanuel congregation decided to begin holding services on Sunday mornings. The Englis service was at 10 a.m. and the German service was at 11 a.m. On January 28, 1934, the congregation applied for membership in the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod.
